John Boyega shared Mark Hamill’s frustration’s with Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Next week will see the release of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, the final installment of the Sequel Trilogy and the culmination of the entire nine-film Skywalker Saga. While the new films have proven to be enormously successful (with the exception of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY), they didn't always strike a chord with certain fans, and no film in the franchise has been more divisive than STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI.

The choices which writer/director Rian Johnson made with THE LAST JEDI continue to provoke debate among fans, and even some of those involved with the film have voiced their frustrations with where Johnson took the story. During an interview with Hype Beast, John Boyega said that he didn't necessarily agree with where the film took its characters.

The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid, The Last Jedi if I'm being honest I'd say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that's something that spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us, because we were separated.

"I guess the original Star Wars films there was much more of a trio feel where it was essentially about Luke's journey, but Han and Leia there was a strong dynamic, which I think, I don't know how quickly we're going to be able to establish that long-term dynamic with [Episode] Nine," Boyega explained. "But if it's exploring that dynamic, then that would be cool. I do feel even after three films still, we don't know them as much as we got to know Han, Luke, Leia. And maybe that's a great opportunity to get to know them a little more." We have a little less than two weeks to go before we discover how the stories of Rey, Finn, and Poe are wrapped up, but I certainly agree with Boyega's assessment regarding how much we know about our central characters as well as the amount of time they've spent together; hell, Poe didn't meet Rey for the first time until the final moments of THE LAST JEDI. From the looks of things, we'll get to spend much more time with the trio in THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, but I hope it's not too little, too late.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER will hit theaters on December 20th.
