When STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER arrives in theaters, the J.J. Abrams-directed adventure set in a galaxy far, far away will mark the official conclusion of the three-trilogy Skywalker Saga. Some would say that this is a cause for celebration, while others will undoubtedly mourn the end of an era in science-fiction storytelling. With so much mystery now circling the future of Star Wars' theatrical affairs, one can't help but wonder if characters like Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) will play a part in shaping the stories to come.
Recently while engaging in an interview with Variety, Boyega was asked if he'd be willing to return to the Star Wars universe for a future chapter of the ongoing sci-fi saga.
“In what?” was Boyega's initial response. He then added, "You ain't going to Disney Plus me!" he said with a Cheshire's grin.
Boyega is obviously talking about the slate of Star Wars shows that are bound for Disney+, the studio's exclusive streaming service. At launch, Disney debuted Jon Favreau's THE MANDALORIAN, an 8-episode action-adventure series starring Pedro Pascal as a mysterious bounty hunter. Four episodes into the series, and Star Wars fans are already obsessed with the show's enigmatic lead, as well as Baby Yoday, the Cub to Pascal's Wolf, if you will.
“I ain’t getting no Disney Plus!” he says. “I’m watching it, though, but I’ll stay in the feature films.”
While Boyega clearly has no interest in making the jump to Disney+, he did express interest in returning for another Star Wars feature, should the franchise need to enlist Finn for another out-of-this-world odyssey.
"As long as Daisy and Oscar are down for it, then I’ll come back,” he says.
Ridely and Isaac on the other hand, don't appear to be as enthusiastic.
“I don’t know,” Isaac told Variety. He then went on to say that while he's enjoyed his time with the franchise, he feels as if STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER as “the closing of a chapter of my life.” He then added, "[I’m] happy and feeling fulfilled that the task is complete,” he says. “So I can’t imagine what it would be that would make me want to redo this thing or revisit it.”
As for Ridley – who for the past several years has endured the uglier aspects of Star Wars fandom alongside her co-star Kelly Marie Tran – she is very much planting her flag atop Mt. Isaac. “I just don’t know if anything could top this one, honestly,” she says. “I think it’s just a great story and a great close, and even though obviously the characters continue to exist, it would have to be so extraordinary [to return], and I don’t know if that’s possible.”
One of the best aspects of Star Wars is that the franchise is forever-expanding, thus giving creators plenty of opportunity to introduce new characters or welcome old ones back into the fold. I've no idea what the future holds for Rey, Finn, and Poe, though I wouldn't be opposed to seeing them return to the universe given the right circumstances.
