There's a lot of elements that helped to make BLADE RUNNER the classic it's considered today, and one of the most notable of those was the score from Vangelis. While most electronic scores from yesteryear generally date the film, Vangelis was able to create a sonic landscape that felt new, yet familiar. It goes hand in hand with the fantastic imagery, so I think we can all agree the music for Denis Villeneuve's sequel has to accomplish much of the same feat. It looks like we're headed in the right direction, as Playlist is reporting that Villeneuve's usual collaborator, Johann Johannson, will be scoring the UNTITLED BLADE RUNNER SEQUEL.
Johannson has scored Villeneuve's recent projects, including ARRIVAL, SICARIO and PRISONERS. While Johannson's music may not immediately come to mind in regards to stand-out scores, the man has been scoring films for the better part of two decades, and helping to craft a great atmosphere to accompany Villeneuve's visuals. Creating a sequel to BLADE RUNNER that lives up to the original will be no easy task, but we probably have the best possible production team that we could ask for. Here's hoping they're up to the task!
The UNTITLED BLADE RUNNER SEQUEL will hit theaters on October 6, 2017.
