Community: Joel McHale says studios are interested in a movie adaptation of the hit comedy series

If you’re a fan of Dan Harmon’s Community, you’re very familiar with the dream of having six seasons and a movie. Premiering in late 2009, the series aired on NBC and received solid critical acclaim throughout most of its six seasons. There was a mixed reception for its fourth season, which saw Harmon being fired by NBC, but it’s mostly credited for putting a lot of its talent on the map, both in front of and behind the camera. Fans have wanted a movie adaptation of Community to fulfill that dream of six seasons and a movie and now one of the show’s stars, Joel McHale, is saying that some studios are interested in a movie adaptation of the hit comedy series.

During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Joel McHale spoke about the long-gestating movie adaptation and he offered up a hopeful update on the film by confirming studios are interested in doing it after seeing the show’s success via streaming:

“I’m setting aside all the money to make [the movie] happen. Before when I’d answer the question, I’d be like, ‘Maybe, I have no idea.’ But now, with its success on the streamers during the pandemic, the interest has returned. I would say it’s more likely than it was before, definitely, but it’s like building an aircraft carrier. You go, ‘We’re gonna do this, right? Yeah, okay, everybody’s here, we got the money.’ Now, this thing has to actually get built. There’s a lot more than just ‘Hey, let’s make a movie now, great.’ It’s a lot of moving parts. So I’m more positive than I was, definitely, but we’ll see. That’s a terrible answer, but definitely better than my answer two years ago.”

Plans for a Community movie began in 2014 when the series was first canceled by NBC. The cast has all expressed interest in coming back for a film and it’s based around a joke popularized in the show itself as Danny Pudi’s Abed frequently spoke on the concept of some TV shows getting six seasons and a movie to close out its story properly. Dan Harmon has given frequent updates about a film, even saying that he had begun writing a script for it, so there is definitely interest in making it happen.

Community starred Joel McHale as Jeff Winger, a former lawyer who is forced to attend Greendale Community College after being disbarred for claiming to have a bachelor’s degree. He hopes to skate by with cheating and minimal effort but he begins to grow as a person when he becomes close with a Spanish study group that he initially created just to sleep with one of its members. In addition to McHale, the series also starred Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Chevy Chase, and Jim Rash.
