Joe Russo says Infinity War has “three or four airport sequences”

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR featured enough characters to be considered another Avengers movie by fans, even if the team was fighting each other, and not a major villain like Loki (Tom Hiddleston) or Thanos (Josh Brolin). Having some of the best moments in the MCU, the one scene that really makes CIVIL WAR a Marvel standout is the famous airport sequence, which sees the two factions of heroes squaring off in an epic brawl. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR will feature even more heroes and even greater stakes, and according to director Joe Russo, will have even more airport scene-level sequences.

Russo (who shares directing credit with his brother, Anthony) was speaking with Fandango for an in-depth interview about the movie, and was asked about the massive CIVIL WAR scene, and if this new movie has anything like that. Needless to say, fans looking for such a moment will have their thirsts quenched more than once.

You know, it's crazy, but the level of ambition in the airport sequence almost killed my brother and I. It was a really intense sequence. It took us literally a year to execute from start to finish, from the time we rolled cameras on it till the time we locked picture on it. It was a lot of work and it kept evolving as it went. This movie has three or four airport sequences. We really wanted to feel the concept of Infinity War so I think I don't want to point out any one specifically, so I don't spoil it for anyone, but there are some huge sequences in this movie.

As we’ve seen in the trailers for the movie, INFINITY WAR has numerous major set pieces, with the recent trailer (above), showing several groups of heroes fighting Thanos on several levels. For example, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) fight him in one area, while Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson) and more fight him in Wakanda. Just the thought of those two scenes makes the CIVIL WAR scene look like playing with action figures in the bathtub.

The airport sequence is considered one of the best moments in the MCU, so saying INFINITY WAR has three or four scenes on that same level is a really tall order to deliver. However, if the movie does deliver, that means this will be a comic book movie experience that none of us are truly ready to witness. Can our brains really handle that much epicness? Theaters should have paramedics standing by just in case.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives April 27.
