Jim Carrey has no plans to revisit any of his old characters

As Jim Carrey has been making the rounds promoting Sonic The Hedgehog 2, he has made some pretty interesting revelations. On Friday, he revealed that he’s likely to retire from acting after making the video game sequel and now, if you were hoping for sequels featuring some of his most iconic characters, you’re likely out of luck at this point.

During a chat with ComicBook.com, the actor revealed that he has no old characters in mind that he wants to revisit. Some fans thought it could be a possibility when, during this year’s Super Bowl, a new advertisement brought back his character from The Cable Guy. While that one-off was fun, Carrey seems adamant that too much time has passed to consider making sequels to some of his classic films:

“I don’t have any in mind that I would like to. Most of the time when you make something that really hits with people, the sequels have a diminishing return. If you do it long enough after the fact, you’re kind of imitating yourself now; you’re not using your original inspiration. These [Sonic] movies were made close together, and they were like an evolution that was being planned in my own head, at least, from the get-go.”

I can respect Carrey’s decision on this because he’s pretty accurate about diminishing returns for some sequels, especially in the world of comedy. While it could be fun to see him in a sequel to The Mask, Ace Ventura, or The Cable Guy, the creative outcome would likely not match those of their predecessors. Sometimes it’s good to leave something great in the past.
