Back in the 1990s, there were few stars as big as Jim Carrey. From comedy hits like DUMB AND DUMBER to Oscar darlings like THE TRUMAN SHOW, few films were as representative of his star power as his villainous turn in BATMAN FOREVER. While SONIC THE HEDGEHOG may be Carrey's first major studio role in quite some time, the actor put as much effort into playing the Sega video game bad guy as any other role. The actor even drew some comparisons with his Batman character, The Riddler, in a recent interview.
While speaking with Comicbook.com at a press junket for SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, Carrey proposed that Riddler and Robotnik share more similarities than one would assume:
"Well, I think I think they're both basically spinning. They're both spinning in the tree of knowledge. They're leaping from branch to branch and falling occasionally," Carrey explained. "I wouldn't put one against the other. I think they'd be a great team. But you know, it's like Robotnik and every super villain basically comes from a place of neglect with a feeling of absolute worthlessness that manifests itself in in magnificent creations that are designed to control the world, put their brand on everybody, and maybe even get inside your bloodstream with some nanotechnology occasionally."
Whoa. That's like, surprisingly deep, man. Snarking aside, I can't wait to see Carrey let loose when SONIC THE HEDGEHOG blasts into theaters on February 14th. I feel as if it's been way too long since a script called for the In Living Color alum to truly let loose, and I've no doubt that Carrey will be channeling some of his most elaborate facial contortions for the Robotnik role. Furthermore, it does my heart good to think that the current generation of young ones are poised to bear witness to his lunacy, whether they're ready for it or not.
