The latter half of the year will bring us not only a bevy of massive movies but the release of one of the largest TV events ever—THE DEFENDERS. The Netflix series will act as an Avengers-style team-up show featuring Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Danny Rand). We were treated to our first major images from the show last week, and now the floodgates are open for future goodies.
Among those goodies is an interview Ritter gave to EW where she opened up about the mindset of Jones in the series, and how the events of her solo show are taking root:
She’s still dealing with the aftermath of Kilgrave, and now she’s dealing with ‘success’ — and not well. People want her to work for them, she’s getting a lot of business, and she’s not ready for any of that. She hasn’t changed, but her environment has, and there’s no handbook for how to exist in a world where you are now popular.
Jones, who lives with a bit of a chip on shoulder and prefers to fly solo, will have a lot to deal with when working with this team, something that doesn’t begin smoothly. She even called the dynamic between Jones and Daredevil/Matt Murdock as very “cat and mouse.” When asked who’s who she said:
It switches back and forth, to be honest. No one’s best friends in all of the Defenders. This is a reluctant team-up.
As for the scope of the show:
When I read the first two scripts, I was like, ‘Wow, this is going to be big,’ because it’s so fun seeing these huge characters, and not just the four of us, but all of us in one show. This just has a big scope. It’s a much bigger world, because all of our characters have a very specific way in, a specific beat.
Jessica Jones’s solo show really stands out to me. More so than the other shows hers feels much more character driven, relying more on Jones as an individual than her being the main character in a larger ensemble. Ritter nailed the role and will hopefully bring her attitude and charm to THE DEFENDERS. I mean, she has to find a way to stand out somehow, what with all these boys around.
THE DEFENDERS will go onto Netflix later this year.
