Production on Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN starring Matt Damon should start sometime this fall, and Deadline is reporting two actresses are being eyed for roles in the film. Both Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig are in early talks to join the sci-fi movie, and according to the site, Chastain is closer than Wiig to actually signing on for the project.
THE MARTIAN is based on Andy Weir's book of the same name, and the script was written by Drew Goddard, who at one point was also attached to direct the film. The movie will follow Damon's Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut who is stranded alone on Mars after being injured during a dust storm. With his crew believing he is dead and no way of contacting NASA, Watney must figure out how to survive, and possibly make it back to Earth.
THE MARTIAN will be the second space themed flick for Jessica Chastain, with the first being the upcoming Christopher Nolan movie INTERSTELLAR. I'm a little surprised to see Kristen Wiig being considered for the film since she's more known for her work in comedies. But besides being pretty damn funny, Wiig is also a solid actress, and should do a great job in the film. Since filming is scheduled to start soon, there will likely be more casting news for the project in the near future. Who would you like to see join Matt Damon in Ridley Scott's new movie?
THE MARTIAN will open on November 25, 2015.
