Jerry Bruckheimer says Top Gun 2 may still happen

Despite reports that the sequel to TOP GUN was no longer happening in the wake of director Tony Scott‘s death, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has some information to the contrary. In the wake of TOP GUN’s 3D re-release on Blu-ray, Bruckheimer has two more big franchise films on the horizon: THE LONE RANGER this summer and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 after that. But, TOP GUN remains on his radar even after the most recent collapse of the project.

Bruckheimer was asked about TOP GUN 2 at the Produced By 2013 conference and he had this to say:

“For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom [Cruise] and Paramount are still interested in making it.”

Tom Cruise recently dropped out of Guy Ritchie‘s THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. in favor of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5, a more guaranteed box office success in the wake of his lackluster grosses on OBLIVION and JACK REACHER. TOP GUN still has a huge following even decades after initial release. I am sure a sequel would be a hit.

“It’s something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we’ll get it made,”

Bruckheimer referred to Tony Scott‘s death as a “pause” in TOP GUN 2’s future. I don’t think Bruckheimer means any disrespect to Scott, but for me it was the visual prowess on display in TOP GUN that made it worth seeing, not Cruise or the awfully hammy acting. Like GHOSTBUSTERS, a sequel to TOP GUN is an idea that sounds good on paper but should never be a reality.
