Last week on GOTHAM, fans of the madcap, take-as-many-liberties-as-you-like comic book crime drama caught a glimpse of Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome Valeska AKA The Joker, chilling in a deep freeze of sorts. After that teaser, many were left wondering as to just how long it would take for Jerome to be put through the “Demolition Man process”, so that he can start wreaking havoc on the good people of Gotham, once again.
Today, it’s been revealed that Jerome will make his proper return to the program when the episode entitled Mad City: The Gentle Art of Making Enemies airs on January 30, 2017. The Shameless star recently spoke about his excitement to return to the character, as evidenced by the quotes you can read below:
I really can’t wait for people to see it. We have a few different looks [for him]…it looks really great. Our make-up special effects designer Mike Maddi did a phenomenal job.
In addition to Monaghan’s triumphant return to the show, fans are bound to notice that there’s something different about Jerome’s appearance, this time out. Can you guess what it is? That’s right, the would-be Clown Prince of Crime is sporting some pretty nasty scars. Personally, I can’t help but feel like this is a tip of the hat to comic book creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, whose phenomenal Batman series featured a similar look for the yin to Batman’s yang.
Okay, so I might have to start watching GOTHAM, again. For me, Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome is the best character the show has ever produced, and I'm genuinely excited to see him make his return to the dark and dangerous streets of Gotham City. And while not every aspect of GOTHAM is to my liking, I do retain some level of respect for just how off-the-rails the show has gone since the program’s rather underwhelming first season. From what I’ve seen of it, Season 3 has been a lot of fun. Here’s hoping that Monaghan’s Jerome can kick things up a notch and keep the weird coming from this “Elseworlds” Batman-related show.
GOTHAM airs on Monday nights at 8/7c via the Fox network.
