No one does unsettling quite like M. Night Shyamalan, and the writer/director will be bringing his own particular brand of unsettling content to television with Servant, a new psychological horror series which is set to debut on the Apple TV+ streaming service later this month. Servant follows Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose) and Sean Turner (Toby Kebbell), a couple grieving the loss of their young child who make use of a hyper-realistic doll which resembles their infant son as a form of therapy. The latest teaser for Servant focuses on the creation of the doll, who is known as Jericho. It's pretty creepy.
"The premise of this piece," Shyamalan explained, "is that a couple loses a child and they wind up doing this fringe therapy with a doll. Which is an actual therapy. But it gets so extreme that the mother decides to hire a nanny to take care of the doll. That premise is so tragic and weird and scary, but it's also oddly and inappropriately funny. That's the tone that I've been really interested in with The Visit and with Split. Where you're scared and laughing at the same time." As Shyamalan mentioned, the couple even hires a nanny (Nell Tiger Free) to take care of Jericho, but as time goes on, she grows increasingly attached and it becomes clear to the Turners that they've opened their door to a something mysterious and sinister.
Servant will debut on Apple TV+ on November 28th.
