Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone has proven to be an enormous success for Paramount, and Sheridan is looking to keep things on the small-screen as it was announced today that Jeremy Renner has been tapped to star in his next series, Mayor of Kingstown.
The Paramount+ series will be centered around the McLusky family – power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither. "I am excited to dig into the complex and rough-around-the-edges character of Mike McLusky (the Mayor of Kingstown)," said Jeremy Renner in a statement. "In a world otherwise forgotten in society, Mike serves as a flawed system of checks and balances. Taylor has brought to life a layered and poignant universe that is not only incredibly intriguing but also more relevant than ever." Antoine Fuqua, who has signed on to executive produce Mayor of Kingstown, added, "When Taylor told me about Mayor of Kingstown, I immediately wanted to be a part of it. The series offers a comprehensive look into the brutal prison system where sociopolitical issues run rampant. Prisons are a forgotten world to most of the population and yet represent a microcosm of society as a whole." I'm down.
Before Jeremy Renner takes on Mike McLusky, he will next be seen reprising his role of Clint Barton in Marvel's Hawkeye series for Disney+. He'll be starring alongside Hailee Steinfeld, who is playing Kate Bishop, a young woman trained by Barton. "What I get to do in the show ultimately is shepherd an amazing character, ultimately a better version of me and the sentiment of that is the fiber of what Hawkeye is, at least what I think Hawkeye is — a superhero without superpowers and I get to teach someone else to be a superhero without super powers," said Renner at San Diego Comic-Con last year. The series is also set to star Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, and Alaqua Cox and will debut on Disney+ later this year.
