Jennifer Lee details her methodology behind writing Frozen 2 for Disney

Over the past several years, screenwriter Jennifer Lee has proven herself to be a powerhouse of talent by penning such critically-acclaimed animated films as WRECK-IT RALPH, ZOOTOPIA, and FROZEN. With A WRINKLE IN TIME set to arrive in theaters on March 9th, for which Lee also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Stockwell, many Elsa and Anna fans have been eager to learn of what the in-demand writer has planned for Disney's FROZEN 2, which is now in pre-produciton.

While recently speaking with Comicbook.com, Lee, who will also co-direct FROZEN 2 alongside Chris Buck (TARZAN, SURF'S UP, FROZEN), revealed to the entertainment outlet a bit about her approach to the highly-anticipated animated sequel.

"I think I can say the number one thing we all held hands on, because we all signed back up again on that one is to not think of the Zeitgeist part of Frozen, because that's not how we made it in the first place," Lee explained. "In fact, a lot of people didn't know if the world was interested in the story we had to tell, because it was a musical with two female leads. And we spent it from building character out, and from every inch of what they're struggling with. How can we push them? What are we feeling about them? And we're doing the same thing. I'm really excited about where it's going. I can't wait to share it. But we don't start production until the summer. It's still got its journey. It's still going."

I think that Lee raises some very important questions, as fans of the FROZEN franchise are bound to be eyeing this movie harder than a child attempting to sneak a peek at Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. As she continued her talk, Lee assured FROZEN fans that the film will feature the same characters you fell in love with during the original film, though a bit of growth is necessary for them to remain interesting and endearing.

"The writing part of it is the same," Lee confessed. "The story is a story, is a story. And I don't write animated films for kids. They just happen to be animated. The same with A Wrinkle In Time. It's a family film. But you write it like you would any story. You have to find the truth in the character. The journey is different, but in terms of writing it, the same rules apply, I guess you could say."

Since working on Disney's FROZEN, Lee has grown exponentially as a screenwriter, and we'll be looking forward to see what manner of movie magic she can conjure when FROZEN 2 blows into theaters on November 27, 2019. Additionally, A WRINKLE IN TIME will arrive in theaters on March 9th.
