Jennifer Connelly, Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali join Alita: Battle Angel

Man, it feels like James Cameron has been trying to make this thing forever. Honestly I thought it was never going to happen, especially since it seemed like he was going to be busy making AVATAR movies until he croaked. But his passion project, the live-action adaptation of the anime ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, is finally coming to fruition! Unfortunately he won't be behind the camera (that honor belongs to Robert Rodriguez), but Cameron doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would keep his hands completely off the reins.

In fact, shooting has already commenced, and is filming in Texas (of course)! Rosa Salazar (MAZE RUNNER) has already been cast as the titular "Battle Angel", but she is now going to be joined by the likes of Jennifer Connelly, Christoph Waltz, and Mahershala Ali. It is reported Connelly, as opposed to the more obvious Waltz, will be playing the villain.

In fact, our own Paul Shirey was on the film's set, so keep an eye out for our coverage down the line!

Meanwhile, here's the synopsis, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

So what do you Schmoes think? You down for another live-action anime adaptation? Sound off below!

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL will kick ass in theaters July 20th, 2018.
