It's been nearly ten years since the last big-screen installment of Wes Craven's SCREAM franchise, but a fifth film is now on the way with both David Arquette and Courteney Cox set to reprise their roles of Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers, respectively. The rest of the cast is beginning to fill out and Deadline has reported that Jenna Ortega has signed on to join the film from Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures.
The actress is best known for her roles in TV shows such as Jane the Virgin and You, as well movies like IRON MAN 3, INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, and Netflix's upcoming THE BABYSITTER: KILLER QUEEN. Jenna Ortega isn't the only franchise newcomer in the cast, as it was announced just days ago that Melissa Barrera (IN THE HEIGHTS) had landed a "key role" in the film. The SCREAM relaunch will be helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed READY OR NOT, from a script by James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC) and Guy Busick (Castle Rock). Kevin Williamson, who wrote three of the four SCREAM movies, is also onboard as an executive producer for the new film. The film is slated to shoot in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Although the return of David Arquette and Courteney Cox is official, we still don't know whether or not Neve Campbell will be back as Sidney Prescott. Earlier this year, the actress revealed that she has been talking with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett about the project. "I originally had been really apprehensive about doing another Scream without Wes because he was such a genius and he is the reason they are what they are," Campbell said, "but the directors have come to me with such a great appreciation for Wes’s work and they really want to honor it and that meant a lot to me. Hopefully we’ll be able to do it."
Jenna Ortega will next be seen in THE BABYSITTER: KILLER QUEEN, which is slated to debut on Netflix on September 10, 2020.
