The first trailer for THE BATMAN was released during DC FanDome a little over a week ago, and it's safe to say that it appears as though we've got one hell of an incredible film to look forward to. Not only does it look like Matt Reeves is delivering something brimming with atmosphere and style, but the film also features quite the cast, including Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Andy Serkis, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeffrey Wright, and Colin Farrell. In regards to the character of The Penguin Batman movie casting may be breaking new ground with how much an actor can transform into one of the iconic villains. For Colin Farrell Penguin is a chance to become something brand new.
While we didn't catch a glimpse of all the new additions to the franchise in the trailer, one face stood out only because it was nearly unrecognizable. When Colin Farrell was cast as the Penguin, fans were left wondering just how the handsome actor would slip into the role of the typically grotesque character, and the trailer answered that question for us in a big way. The make-up effects were so seamless that they even fooled members of the cast. Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon in THE BATMAN, spoke on The Jess Cagle Show on SiriusXM to confirm that he was one of those fooled by Farrell's transformation.
Talk about artists, man. I’ve worked with that makeup artist before and it’s just incredible. I mean, Colin walked onto set one day, and I walked right past him [laughs]. I was like, ‘OK, hey dude, what’s happening, where’s Colin, are we going to shoot?’ It was, it’s pretty remarkable.
Agreed; absolutely remarkable. I can't wait to see more. Jeffrey Wright also dropped a few other teases about THE BATMAN, including confirming that the film will definitely showcase Batman's detective skills, something that hasn't been utilized to its full potential in previous movies. "When I read the script I said to myself, 'Yeah this is on it,'" Wright said. "You go back to the original [Batman comics], it’s DC, it’s Detective Comics, and the script is really beholden to that, beholden to this idea that Batman is the world’s greatest detective, and I think as Gary Oldman once described, Gordon is something of a Watson to him. And so The script honors that, and it also set a tone that was very clear, and a tone that has been captured in that trailer." THE BATMAN is slated to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
