The Law & Order revival has found its star for what NBC is calling the series’ 21st season. Former Burn Notice star, Jeffrey Donovan, has been tapped to lead the revival as a brand new character.
Donovan will be playing an NYPD detective and is apparently the first of a couple of new high-profile cast additions that are set to be announced in the future. Season 21 of Law & Order also plans on bringing back several of the veterans from the original run of the series including, per “Deadline“, Sam Waterston and Anthony Anderson, who are reportedly both in talks to make a return.
The latest installment of Law & Order comes from Dick Wolf and writer-showrunner Rick Eid. Per NBC, the series will once again examine “the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.” Given the fact that Law & Order: SVU and the latest addition Law & Order: Organized Crime, are going strong, I suspect we will also be seeing several crossovers when the parent series returns to the lineup.
Law & Order originally ran for 20 seasons and was on the cusp of topping Gunsmoke’s record as the longest-running primetime drama ever when NBC canceled the series in May of 2010 without a proper series finale after renewal negotiations fell through. The record did stay in the Law & Order family when SVU, now in its 23rd season, took the crown. During its long run, Law & Order was nominated for more than 50 Emmy Awards and won in 1997 for Outstanding Drama Series.
Jeffrey Donovan is best known for playing CIA operative Michael Westen on the hit USA series Burn Notice, which had a very successful seven-season run. Donovan was most recently seen in season 2 of FX’s Fargo and he starred on the Hulu series Shut Eye. The actor also has three films set for release in 2022 including Surrounded, 892, and First Love. Looks like Donovan is going to be very busy heading into the new year.
