Assuming Warner Bros.' upcoming FLASHPOINT will follow the comic story-line on which it's reportedly based, the film will find Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) awakening in an altered DC Universe full of some fairly significant differences, including that Thomas Wayne, not Bruce Wayne, has taken on the mantle of the Batman. Should the film follow these events and feature Thomas Wayne as Batman, well, they've already got a pretty fantastic Batman built into their mythology. In a brief scene in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, Jeffrey Dean Morgan played Thomas Wayne during a retelling of that fateful shooting which helped to shape the young Bruce Wayne, and it seems that Morgan is absolutely game to reprise the role once again.
While speaking with Total Film, Jeffrey Dean Morgan commented on the idea of him playing Batman in FLASHPOINT.
We’ll see. I mean, look, DC is DC and they’ll figure out what they’re going to do next. But I’m highly aware of the character, I will say that. I’m highly aware of the character, and it would probably be a thrill of a lifetime to put on the Batsuit… And what I know about the Flashpoint Batman is, you know, for me, I think he is not only the darkest of the Batmen, but the coolest. And I love his whole storyline and who he is and the tortured soul of it all.
Again, we don't know exactly where Warner Bros. will be taking FLASHPOINT, but you can count me among those who would be more than happy to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan take on the role. The actor isn't the only one excited about the possibility of Thomas Wayne in FLASHPOINT, as Ezra Miller has also expressed his enthusiasm for the Thomas Wayne story. "I think that the emotional arc of the Thomas Wayne stuff in Flashpoint is one of the illest [parts]. And to see that different manifestation of Batman and his whole different style," Ezra said. "And I love the reality that you have this universe that is so inverted from the one that we know. And this one factor remains the same, but in this flipped way. Batman is steady, but it's going to be the result of a different side of the same tragedy with Thomas Wayne instead of Bruce, and that's dope." Miller also had positive things to say about Jeffrey Dean Morgan possibly reprising the role, saying, "Oh, hell yeah. I think he's amazing. And I think he would fall right into what is becoming a very, very serious ensemble of actors." John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (VACATION) are slated to helm FLASHPOINT, and I'd imagine that Warner Bros. is hoping that the third time will be the charm as both Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa have previously exited the project due to creative differences. Fingers crossed.
