INTELLIGENT LIFE is a film that's been in development for a while. It's based on a spec script from JURASSIC WORLD's Colin Trevorrow and writing partner Derek Connolly about a UN worker that makes first contact with an alien – who looks like a beautiful woman – and a romance ensues.
So, why are aliens always human looking? Honestly, if the first alien to make contact looked like E.T. or a xenomorph or a MARS ATTACKS Martian or something and the guy still wanted to go to pound-town, I'd actually be more interested. At least it would be more unique. And honestly, who are we to judge?
Anyway, Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment picked the project up, and the script has been given to AUSTIN POWERS director Jay Roach to polish and help develop. It also seems that Spielberg is hoping that Roach may step in to direct, after the originally attached director – Ava DuVernay – left to pursue Disney's A WRINKLE IN TIME.
I don't know how I feel about the project. I f*cking loathed Trevorrow's JURASSIC WORLD (barring the cage match at the end where the raptor practically does an elbow drop off the T-Rex's back, and then they give each other a FAST AND THE FURIOUS-esque "I don't like you, but dammit I respect you" look at the end). And I know that movie has its fans, and that's cool, I just happen to not be one of them. Having said all that, I did love Trevorrow's debut SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED, which was ostensibly a romance, so maybe that's more his wheelhouse and why Spieldberg snatched his script up.
As for Roach, I think he's solid. I haven't loved much of what he's done, but I don't think he's ever made a bad movie (save the FOCKER films, maybe). So I'm curious about the project, even if I wish they pushed the envelope and had a man fall in love with a real alien and not just some hot chick who happens to be from space.
What do you guys think? And hottest alien?
