The tragic wildfires that have engulfed Maui have proven absolutely devastating, with Hawaii’s second-largest island — in particular the city of Lahaina — facing heartbreaking damage and loss. This week, actor and Hawaii native Jason Momoa took to social media to show his support and let people know how they can help.

On Thursday, Jason Momoa posted on Instagram, “We are devastated and heartbroken for our friends and ‘ohana on Maui who been impacted by the recent wildfires.” He added, “Families were forced to evacuate on short notice, many escaping with only the clothes on their backs. Information on injuries and fatalities is still coming in. Lahaina town is gone. Many other places on Maui were also affected. We continue to send pule (prayers) to this incredible community.” He also linked directly to the organization ‘Aina Momona.

But it’s not just donations that can help the citizens, as Jason Momoa also urged people to stay away from the area, writing on Friday, “Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. DO NOT TRAVEL TO MAUI. Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply.” In other words, the Insta clout can wait.

As of publication, reports have put the death toll from the wildfires upwards of 80 people, making it the deadliest in the state’s history and one of the deadliest ever in the United States. No official cause has been determined. While dry conditions and winds from Hurricane Dora may play a role, wildfires are typically caused directly by humans.

On the entertainment front, Jason Momoa stepped into the Fast & Furious franchise this year as Dante Reyes, setting himself up for part two of Fast X. He also has Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set for December, although the constant reshoots aren’t exactly giving the upcoming DCEU entry much hype. Momoa will also star in his co-created and -written upcoming limited series Chief of War, which will focus on the unification and colonization of Hawaii.
