Jason Momoa to develop and star in Hawaiian history drama Chief of War for Apple

Jason Momoa is looking to keep his relationship with Apple TV going as he’s set to star in Chief of War. This historical drama series will follow the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view.

In addition to starring in Chief of War, Jason Momoa will also co-write and executive produce the eight-episode series. Doug Jung is attached to serve as showrunner of the Apple series with Jason Momoa writing alongside Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who will also executive produce alongside Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, and Doug Jung. Pachinko director Justin Chon is in negotiations to helm the first two episodes. Chief of War would be Jason Momoa’s first time writing for television, but he previously co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film Road to Paloma.

Jeff Sneider of The Ankler first reported the news, saying that Chief of War will take place “around 1795 when the four major kingdoms of Hawaii were constantly in a state of war. Tired of bloodshed, legendary warrior Ka’iana left Maui’s army to live a peaceful life as a fisherman. However, he’s pulled back into battle when Seers, who have visions of the future, identify him as the one who will fulfill an ancient prophecy that will bring peace to all of Hawaii.

Chief of War will be the second Apple series for Jason Momoa as he already stars in See, a sci-fi series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic future in which nearly all remaining humans have lost their sense of sight. the second season of See wrapped up last year and Apple has already renewed it for a third. Momoa has plenty of big projects coming up, including Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on March 17, 2023, and playing the villain in Fast & Furious 10.
