Deadline is reporting that Jared Hess (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, NACHO LIBRE) has been tapped by Paramount and Nickelodeon to direct NICKTOONS, a crossover movie in the vein of WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT that will feature characters from classic 1990s animated series such as Rugrats, The Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy and Aaahh! Real Monsters.
Parent at Disruption Entertainment's Ali Mendes came up with the idea for the flick, and besides directing, Hess will also co-pen the script with his wife and writing partner Jerusha Hess.
In case you were wondering about Hey Arnold! and Doug, a TV film is currently in the works for the former, while Disney owns the rights to the latter. Unfortunately, at this point there's no word on if the movie will also include characters from other '90s Nickelodeon cartoon shows.
As a huge fan of all these series (especially Rocko's Modern Life), I'm very curious to see how this will turn out. Does this news make you want to sing "Happy Happy Joy Joy," or do you think NICKTOONS is a bad idea?
Jared Hess' delayed-release comedy MASTERMINDS starring Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig will be in theaters on September 30, 2016.
