Jamie Foxx officially joins The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and dishes a bit on Electro’s origin

After rumored talks, crossed fingers, and less-than-obtuse comments from director Marc Webb on the matter, Jamie Foxx has seemingly officially joined production on the Sony sequel THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.  Listed without fanfare in the press release touting how Dane DeHaan had been chosen to play Harry Osborn, Foxx’s name came without any listed connection to any one character.  That being said, all signs currently point to the man taking on lead villain duties via the part of Electro, and Foxx recently dished a comment or two that revealed a bit about the current-channeling character’s place in the whole Spidey scheme of things.  Nothing game-breaking, but fun to know nonetheless:

“Electro is a great character. I met with the director, Mark Webb, I met with Andrew Garfield, and we talked… I think Electro will be an exciting character to play because he’s a… genius electrician-type person, and he gets the short end of the stick from the whole world, and the next thing you know he turns it on.”

One thing I’m definitely looking forward to seeing, as I for one enjoyed the first movie in this rebooted franchise, is how Electro’s origin is incorporated into the Peter Parker origin saga and his connection to the rest of the characters.  It’d of course be more powerful if he were driven by something beyond “I’m grumpy that everyone treats me like shit so I’m going to get back at them,” but what that something is remains to be seen.  Nor have we had the chance to watch Foxx play the main villain of anything, so tha is also something worth looking forward to.

But are you digging Foxx’s official casting in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2? And if you weren’t a fan of the first movie, does it make you more or less likely to give the sequel a go?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 stars Foxx alongside a returning cast of Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Fields, Dane DeHaan, and Shailene Woodley.  The movie opens May 2nd, 2014.
