Director James Wan's giallo-inspired new film Malignant is set to reach theatres and the HBO Max streaming service on September 10th. Less than two months out from that date, a trailer has arrived online and you can check it out in the embed above! Warner Bros. has also released a poster for Malignant, and that can be seen below.
Scripted by Akela Cooper from a story that Wan, Cooper, and Ingrid Bisu crafted together, Malignant will show us what happens when
Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
The film stars Annabelle Wallis, who previously worked with Wan when he produced and she starred in Annabelle, a spin-off from his film The Conjuring. Wallis is joined in the cast by Maddie Hasson (We Summon the Darkness), George Young (Containment), Michole Briana White (Dead to Me), Jacqueline McKenzie (Palm Beach), Jake Abel (Supernatural), and Ingrid Bisu (The Nun).
Wan produced Malignant with Michael Clear, while Eric McLeod, Judson Scott, Bisu, Peter Luo, Cheng Yang, Mandy Yu, and Lei Han served as executive producers.
The director wanted to fit this horror project in between the huge job of directing Aquaman movies, and he promised from the start that this would be a "hard-R thriller". Malignant has indeed been rated R, earning that rating for "strong horror violence and gruesome images, and for language".
The trailer makes Malignant look pretty cool to me. I could do without some of the more over-the-top moments of people getting tossed through the air, but I am very interested to see more of this supernatural slasher at the center of the story. I will definitely be watching Malignant this September.
Wan and Cooper are also collaborating on The Nun 2; Wan is producing the film and Cooper has written the screenplay.
