UPDATE: James Wan just confirmed the news that shooting has begun on his new horror movie AND given us the official title: MALIGNANT. Check out his post below!
THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS director James Wan's new untitled horror movie – which we're all calling SILVERCUP for the time being – has already snatched up an impressive cast including Annabelle Wallis (see above), George Young (Containment), Jake Abel (Supernatural), and Maddie Hasson (GOD BLESS AMERICA). And today we've learned via Deadline that the film has started shooting in Los Angeles.
Not only that but the giallo flick has also added Michole Briana White (ENCINO MAN) & Jacqueline McKenzie (Netflix's Pine Gap) to the cast as well.
As you can imagine, plot details are currently being kept under wraps. But that said, Wan has said:
I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets. That’s all I’ll say for now."
The "hard-R thriller" with "old school, practical effects" is written by Wan along with THE NUN actress Ingrid Bisu who got engaged to Wan in June.
On top of co-writing and directing this New Line horror movie, Wan will also produce the film through his Atomic Monster banner with Michael Clear. The film is being independently financed through Starlight Media and Midas Innovation, who will retain distribution rights in China. The plan is for Wan to shoot the film in Los Angeles and then move into pre-production on AQUAMAN 2 in 2020. The film is currently shooting in Los Angeles.
Now I don't know about you but just at the promise of a new horror movie directed by James Wan, this movie had my money in its mysterious hand. Will this film be a "giallo" as we've hear rumored or another monster altogether? I guess we'll be finding out sooner rather than later (fingers crossed).
