To the outside world, Aquaman has frequently been the butt of jokes, but now that Jason Momoa will be filling Aquaman's sparkly green pants, I'd imagine that we'll be taking the hero much more seriously. Although we did get a brief glimpse at the character in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, Zack Snyder's upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE will serve as our first real introduction to the King of Atlantis. Production on the standalone AQUAMAN flick will kick off next year under the direction of James Wan (THE CONJURING), and Wan recently teased what the tone of his movie will be while speaking with Entertainment Tonight during the Australians in Film Awards Gala.
I kind of don't want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I'm going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story, it's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.
It's not much, but it certainly sounds…fun? After dealing with some world-ending threats in previous DCEU movies, it might be nice to bring back some good ol' fashioned adventure to the franchise. James Wan also teased that the moments between Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, who plays Hera, in JUSTICE LEAGUE will give us a "flavor" of what AQUAMAN could be.
I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, [are] going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be, and that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.
AQUAMAN hits theaters on July 27, 2018, but our next glimpse at he who talks with fish will arrive with JUSTICE LEAGUE on November 17, 2017.
