James Wan’s The Conjuring pushed back to mid-July and Insidious sequel details

As a small preamble, all of these comments come to you via the New York Comic Con.  Moving on now:

Are you holding on to something? Preferably something bolted down and/or really heavy? Alright, if you’ve sufficiently prepared, then feast your eyes on this: James Wan’s next movie THE CONJURING has been delayed six months… because it’s been testing so well with audiences that the studio wants to give it the more prime release date of mid-Jul.  Okay, so perhaps being delayed due to testing well isn’t the most revolutionary of reasons, but it’s still fantastic to encounter in this day and age when studios are more often than not delaying movies for reasons like 1) the 3D post-conversion processor 2) having zero idea what to do with the movie that they have.  Currently we only have the vague designation of “mid-July” for THE CONJURING’s new release date, but we’ll let you know when something more specific rolls around.

Meanwhile, there’s the rumored sequel to INSIDIOUS.  The big thing to note here is that co-writer/director Wan has the very specific intention of being more involved than he was with the direction taken by the SAW franchise. “I think the sequel to ‘Insidious’ is kind of my reaction to Saw where for my own reason I wasn’t as involved in the sequels, and so I felt with Insidious, think it would be good to shepherd it and keep it more in track to the version I had when I made the first film so that it doesn’t detour too far. So yeah, I’m kind of working with Leigh on the story and the script.”

And while Wan and co-creator Leigh Whannell never set out to have a sequel when they made the first movie, Wan went on to say that “if they happen, that’s great because that means people out there love it and they want more of it, but I always felt with Insidious we created this really interesting world that we can explore more, and so even though we didn’t set out to make a sequel, I felt that there are stories still out there that could be told.”  As for when the sequel might actually be made, the answer seems to be something along the lines of sooner rather than sooner.  “We’re still trying to figure out this Insidious sequel and then we should jump onto that. I think that will probably be the next big thing. I might find something small in between that I can dig into, but I’m happy being a Dad.”

Plot recap for THE CONJURING: The story is based on the real life tale of the Perron family and their ordeals in the 1970s. Wilson and Farmgia will be playing a husband and wife team of demonologists and psychic investigators who enter the most horrifying case of their career, spirits in a Rhode Island farmhouse.

Will a sequel to INSIDIOUS bring us more Rose Byrne? I sure hope so!
