Actor James Marsters spilled the beans at Lexington Comic & Toy Con this weekend, confirming that Marvel's popular new Hulu show RUNAWAYS is officially being renewed for a third season.
While on a panel at the convention, Marsters let slip that "“the showrunner just told the cast that we’re in for a third season!” After a brief pause, the iconic BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER star lamented his actions, adding "“I probably just broke all kinds of Marvel rules.” There's a solid chance he's right. Shortly after Marsters' loose lips informed fans attending the panel of the future of the show, Hulu confirmed that Marvel's RUNAWAYS has been confirmed for a 10 episode season 3.
Although former seasons delivered around thirteen episodes per season, RUNAWAYS showrunners/writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage appear to be mimicing the model that has become the norm for most current television shows as a way to give viewers an optimal binging experience.
Marvel's RUNAWAYS is executive produced by Schwartz and Savage of Fake Empire along with Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb and Quinton Peeples. Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski produces as well. Marvel’s Runaways is a co-production with ABC Signature Studios.
“We are so excited to tell more Runaways stories and are so grateful to Marvel, Hulu, our amazing cast and crew and of course our passionate audience,” said Schwartz and Savage. “Season three will be a magical time on Runaways, as we deepen our connection to the Marvel universe. We are honored to continue to play in the sandbox created by Brian K Vaughn and Adrian Alphona.”
RUNAWAYS stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Annie Wersching, Ryan Sands, Angel Parker, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Kevin Weisman, Brigid Brannagh, James Yaegashi, Brittany Ishibashi and Julian McMahon.
The second season saw the Runaways leaving their home and their evil parents behind and learning to live on their own. It showed them scavenging for food, searching for shelter, and trying to create better lives for themselves than the jaded lifestyle their parents embraced. It will be interesting to see what season 3 holds for these young, vulnerable and wholly powerful new additions to the Marvel universe.
