James Marsden played Cyclops in the first three X-Men movies and one could argue that he didn’t really get his fair shot as the character. Marsden captured the natural leadership traits of Scott Summers but he was particularly underused across the three films he appeared in. Now there are rumors swirling that he COULD make a multiverse comeback in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marsden is commenting on the stories and revealing he would love to play the character again.
During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant at the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 premiere, The actor was asked about returning to play Cyclops and while he says there are no official plans for him to reprise the role, he’s completely down to throw on the visor again if the opportunity presents itself:
“I have been too! I have seen it too. I’m watching those headlines as a fan as well. That’d be fun. I’ve been doing it for almost 30 years and it’s very rare to say that you’ve had experiences like the first X-Men. We did three of them, I was part of three of them, and you become a family. You really do love these characters, the cast, the crew, everybody — and the same thing’s happening on this film, which is kind of bringing back memories of that experience. So I would always be open to that, revisiting that world.”
Marsden played a more significant role in the first three X-Men movies but his actual final appearance in the franchise was a cameo appearance at the very end of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Cyclops didn’t show up in Logan but he was presumed dead because, as Xavier’s psychic powers began to degenerate, it’s alluded to that Cyclops was one of the X-Men that died at the hands of his mental abilities. Of course, Logan wasn’t an MCU entry and was under the 20th Century Fox banner before the Disney/Fox merger. Cyclops will likely pop up in the MCU when they decide to reintroduce the X-Men. Maybe they’ll get all meta with it and have Marsden come back. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing that.
Would YOU want James Marsden to return as Cyclops?
