When Bryan Singer announced X-MEN: APOCALYPSE last year, many wondered if the new movie would have an impact on James Mangold's planned sequel to THE WOLVERINE. Most assumed a second movie wouldn't be filmed until after X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, and in his response to a question about the sequel from a fan on Twitter, Mangold confirmed shooting for the next Wolverine movie will begin after the next movie.
However, THE WOLVERINE 2 (or whatever it's going to be called) is by no means set in stone at this point. Although Hugh Jackman and James Mangold have talked about a sequel in the past, there's no guarantee either will definitely be back for the another movie. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE isn't scheduled to hit theaters until 2016, and by then Mangold might be working on something else, or just no longer interested in directing the sequel.
We also don't know if Hugh Jackman will be appearing in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (although Bryan Singer did say the film won't feature any of the stars from the original trilogy a couple of months ago) and if he does, he may want to take a break from playing Wolverine after starring in Bryan Singer's new movie. Including the upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, he has appeared as the character in seven movies, and Jackman has previously said he can't play Logan forever.
But right now, both James Mangold and Hugh Jackman are interested in a sequel to THE WOLVERINE, and I really hope we do get another solo Wolverine movie from Mangold.
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will open on May 23rd, 2014, and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will be released on May 27th, 2016.
