James Mangold says Logan is a “grown-up” movie & not for everyone

For fanboys everywhere, LOGAN is not only a must-see this year but also a symbol of the future becoming the present. Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine for almost two decades, but the time has come to move on. He's been hinting at it for some time, and now that time is upon us. This is not a project being taken lightly, and director James Mangold assures us it will honor the fans who have stuck with Jackman and the character for all these years.

During a recent interview for the movie, Mangold talked about the adult nature of the upcoming superhero flick, classifying it as more of an intense drama than the normal kind of blockbuster we’re used to:

Logan is an attempt to bring an end to the line of Hugh’s kind of amazing performance as Wolverine, and the ambition of doing that is to try and make an adult film about Wolverine, to make a movie for grown-ups. We’re not trying to make a kind of four box something for everyone, we’re trying to make a movie that stands out and is a little different because it’s kind of a, well, grown-up movie…like a grown-up drama that also features intense action.

More news from behind-the-scenes of LOGAN involves the movie's score, with Mangold going on Twitter the other day to confirm that Marco Beltrami will score the film. Beltrami worked with Mangold on 3:10 TO YUMA and THE WOLVERINE, and last year did the scores for movies like THE SHALLOWS and GODS OF EGYPT. Composer Cliff Martinez (DRIVE) was originally set to score the flick, but there’s no word yet on if the two will be collaborating or if Martinez has left the project.

I trust Mangold when he says this will be an adult movie, not just because of the potential buckets of blood we could be seeing, but because the overall tone of the promotional material has been as serious as it can get. This is a benefiting send-off for Jackman and his Wolverine, ensuring it won’t be just another adventure or “CGI f@ckathon”. As for the music I have no idea if Martinez is still involved, but I’m sure Beltrami will do a bang-up job, and give LOGAN that sense of gravitas it needs. But if he doesn’t, well, still…buckets of blood.
