James Hong says Lo-Pan should be in new Big Trouble in Little China

James Hong Lo-Pan

Talk of a remake/continuation of Big Trouble in Little China has been steaming for some time, although it does seem to have a little case of China Syndrome. Right now it seems like the movie is in development hell, but if they do get to it, they better include Lo-Pan–at least according to his portrayer, the great James Hong.

During a sitdown with ComicBook.com, the interviewer asked for James Hong’s thoughts on another Big Trouble in Little China. “Without Lo-Pan? How dare he…I should think they should leave the classic alone. However, I’d like to reappear in the new one and do something spiritually, like Star Wars where the characters come back and do a reprieve of some kind. Obviously, because let’s admit it, Lo-Pan is a huge part of that first one, so how can you forget him?”

Considering Lo-Pan was killed in Big Trouble in Little China, the spiritual aspect would be the likely approach to include him. It’s not like something so mystical would be out of the movie’s realm. In other words, yes, put James Hong and Lo-Pan in the movie!

Dwayne Johnson has been trying to get the project off the ground for years now. Unfortunately, it does seem to be indefinitely on hold, with producer Hiram Garcia citing “complications that come with a legacy property.” Perhaps with Black Adam’s box office numbers proving Dwayne Johnson has leading man appeal, it could get the new Big Trouble in Little China greenlit. But they better hurry because James Hong is 93!

James Hong can currently be seen–well, heard–in Henry Selick’s latest, Wendell & Wild, in theaters now and coming to Netflix on October 28th.
