If you haven’t had a chance to check out GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in theaters, well, what are you waiting for?!? Also, there are some minor spoilers ahead in regards to the film, so tread carefully if you’re that sort of person. Anywho, at the end of GUARDIANS it was established that Peter Quill’s father is not of Earth, and that Yondu knows more than he’s let on. This is something that will definitely be addressed in the future, and for those of you fluent with the GUARDIANS comics, you can take what you know about Quill’s father and throw it out the window. James Gunn recently stated that they’re going to go a different route, as far as that reveal goes.
James Gunn in regards to Peter Quill’s father:
There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us. That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff. It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much.
Regarding the appearance of Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2:
He will show up if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not. Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos. I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like…
While it looks like Thanos will have a major role to play in a third Avengers film, I’m okay with him not showing up in GUARDIANS 2. I somehow doubt he won’t, but from a cinematic standpoint, I want Marvel to bring in Thanos when they have time to really dig into his character and show us why he is such a threat to the universe.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 is currently set for a July 28, 2016 release.
