Due to James Gunn's firing, and subsequent re-hiring, as the writer/director of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, we've had to wait a little longer than usual to witness the next stage of Gunn's little slice of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn recently took part in a quarantine watch party of the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY film, and dropped more than a few interesting tidbits.
James Gunn had completed production on THE SUICIDE SQUAD, the project he took on after Disney fired him, before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down much of Hollywood, and will be turning his attentions to the third GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY film once post-production is complete. That said, Gunn has been planting the seeds of the third installment since day one, particularly when it comes to Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper). We still don't know all that much about Rocket's origins, only to witness the handiwork of the alien scientists in Rocket's cybernetic implants. Rocket himself has commented on his own existence, saying "I didn't ask to get made! I didn't ask to be torn apart and put back together over and over again and turned into some little monster!" According to Gunn, Rocket's origins may play a big part in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3.
This isn't the first time that James Gunn has teased further exploration of Rocket's origins. Several months after the release of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, Gunn said, "As you know, the MCU is one way of processing these characters. 616 is a different one. We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas. It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that."
