Director David Yarovesky's BRIGHTBURN, a horror take on the Superman origin story that was produced by James Gunn and written by Gunn's relatives Brian and Mark Gunn, didn't exactly set the world on fire. It only made a total of $31 million at the global box office, indicating that the general audience didn't have much interest in it to begin with, and when movie-goers who did see it were polled they gave it a C+ CinemaScore. I didn't like BRIGHTBURN myself, and Arrow in the Head's own Eric Walkuski gave it a 5/10 review, but I know it has already established a cult following that would like to see the story continue.

Since the movie had a budget of just $6 million, the story might actually get to continue.

As various sites have noticed, in the comments section of an Instagram post James Gunn gave a hopeful response to a fan asking for another BRIGHTBURN. While the fan (khodjavy) wanted Gunn to direct the sequel himself, Gunn replied that he's going to be busy for the next few years, as he'll be directing a sequel to SUICIDE SQUAD and then wrapping up his GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trilogy,

but we're talking about the sequel.

The ending of BRIGHTBURN reveals that the movie's evil Superboy isn't the only super-powered villain out there, setting up the possibility of a whole evil version of the Justice League.

Starring Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, Steve Agee, Becky Wahlstrom, Stephen Blackehart, and Meredith Hagner, the film had the following synopsis:

A couple's prayers are seemingly answered when an object crash-lands on Earth, carrying a life-form that looks like a baby boy. As the years pass and the alien grows older, it starts to use its mysterious powers in sinister and destructive ways.

BRIGHTBURN is expected to reach home video later this summer.
