A place on earth more awesome than anywhere in space. There’s everything you’ve ever known about adventure, and then there’s…a 4K restoration of The Abyss! James Cameron has confirmed that a 4K home video release of his 1989 film The Abyss will be emerging from the depths sometime soon.
Speaking at Beyond Fest (via Variety), which hosted a special screening of The Abyss, James Cameron confirmed, “All of the mastering is done and I think it drops pretty soon — a couple of months or something like that…There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and it will be available on streaming simultaneously. But I didn’t just want to look at the old HD transfer. I wanted to do it right.”
Fans of James Cameron have been anticipating the 4K releases of a number of his movies – including The Abyss, True Lies, Titanic, and Avatar – for quite some time now, with a 4K release of Titanic set for December. But when producer Jon Landau let it slip back in March that they may be on their way by the end of this year, hype hit the roof. Sure, Disney may not have wanted him giving too many details but now that Cameron himself is providing some information, you may as well store away a few extra bucks for the inevitable discs. Personally, of the lot, I’d love to see True Lies get the 4K treatment for its 30th anniversary next year.
The Abyss would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Best Visual Effects, becoming the second of six (so far) movies by James Cameron to win that statue, a record for any director. It was also nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Sound.
