James Cameron tells us what we can expect in Avatar’s new footage

AVATAR is coming back to theaters for a short time in a re-release that will surely add to the film’s mind boggling box office numbers. But it’s not just for all your grandparents who missed the movie the first time, there’s also a bit of fan service with nine extra minutes of new footage jammed into the film.

What got axed in the initial cut? Speaking to MarketSaw, Cameron says not to worry, it’s nothing lame, and goes on to detail most of the scenes we can expect if we decide to shell out the cash to see it yet again.

It’s actually nine! [Extra minutes.] I added some since that press release. It’s all CG. None of it is kinda boring shots of people sitting around in offices at the base, drinking coffee. It’s all out in the rainforest, some of it is at night. There is a big hunt sequence that’s got a lot of flying, a lot of banshee stuff, riding direhorses, very high-energy, high-impact action. There’s a very powerful emotional scene towards the end that has been added back.

There’s some stuff where the Na’vi sort of counterattack after the bulldozers destroy the willowblade, that’s a night attack scene. And the aftermath of that, how the humans react to that and the steps leading to the war. There’s some stuff with Grace in the school in the jungle, there’s a creature called a stingbat which is brought back in [that one was in the video game ] as well as the sternbeast, which is the animal that they hunt. We see hundreds of those…There are some little bits that have been put back into the end battle. Little action beats, and a little bit added to the love scene, and some other night stuff. It’s all top-quality stuff, it’s all on par with the rest of the film.

Yessss, the hair-braid sex scene made it in. I always wondered why the hell they didn’t intertwine their hair tentacles in the actual film. Is that because it’s the Na’vi equivalent of showing P going straight into V, making the film into a hardcore alien porno? But they kept showing it with all the animals? Ewww.

I’m not sure if I’ll see it again. I might go with my parents, who missed it the first time, but I did see this thing like three times in IMAX 3D already. Although it would be nice to be reminded what a real 3D movie looks like after the endless amounts of shit that spawned after the film’s release.
