If we as a society have come to learn anything about director James Cameron over the years, it’s that A.) A decade can pass before we see another film from him and B.) If the has a passionate stance on something he will speak his mind. The latter can be applied to a wide variety of topics, but the Oscar-winner recently made a brief comment about the superhero genre, saying he hopes the world soon stops showing out for costumed heroes.

While speaking with journalists (via EW) to promote his new documentary show, VISIONARIES: JAMES CAMERON’S STORY OF SCIENCE FICTION, the director of the upcoming four AVATAR sequels said he hopes people soon get “Avenger fatigue,” all before taking a jab at the manhoods of our heroes.
I’m hoping we’re going to start getting Avenger fatigue. Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, Come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides, you know, hypogonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process.
This is not the first time Cameron has made comments about a superhero movie or movies, having made comments about last year’s WONDER WOMAN that sparked some backlash. It’s also unclear if he’s talking about all superhero films or just the big team-up ones like AVENGERS and JUSTICE LEAGUE given the proximity of INFINITY WAR’s release. Perhaps it’s the latter as Cameron did go on to say that movies like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY are “fun” when talking about the growing landscape of sci-fi films (via IndieWire).
Surely fans will (and already are) rip Cameron apart on the internet. I mean, this is the guy who is bringing us yet another TERMINATOR film and four AVATAR sequels. But Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is looking on the bright side, and when asked about the comments by Vulture said, “Uh, he loves the movies! That’s awesome! Wow, James Cameron loves our movies! That’s exciting!”

Look, this is the guy who made TERMINATOR, ALIENS, TITANIC and AVATAR. He’s earned his place among the stars and in the banquet halls of Valhalla. But he’s dishing out jabs where jabs need not be dished out. We can argue with him all the live-long day, but all we have to do is point to movies like BLACK PANTHER and the pre-sales for INFINITY WAR; people are showing out for these movies in record numbers and have been doing so for years. As long as studios like Marvel find ways of keeping things fresh and telling new stories with new characters like T’Challa (PANTHER) and Carol Danvers ( the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL) the genre isn’t going anywhere. And let’s just table the whole “hypogonadal” thing. It’s hard to sire children when you’re guarding the fricking galaxy.
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR arrives April 27.
