AVATAR 2 was set to hit theaters in late 2016, but according to James Cameron, the sequel has been pushed back until late 2017. While at an event in New Zealand to help promote the local film industry, Cameron said the "very involved" writing process for the film is the reason why it will now be released in 2017. The director also says the plan is to finish the scripts for all three planned sequels by the end of this month.
There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film. We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments.
AVATAR didn't really do much for me. While the visuals in it were fantastic, I was disappointed with the story and characters. But I'm still going to check out the sequels, and I'm curious to see what James Cameron will do with them. Are you bummed AVATAR 2 has been pushed back until 2017?
