James Cameron has had discussions about relaunching and directing the Terminator series

It feels like it’s Avatar Month with all the stories surrounding it James Cameron has a lot to with that. Cameron has been making the press rounds and has commented on almost everything from Avatar to Marvel. The Playlist now reports that Cameron has been in discussions to put The Terminator series back on track. The last Terminator saw Cameron coming back as a producer while Deadpool’s Tim Miller took over directing duties. The film came out to less than stellar reviews

The Aliens director recently appeared on the Smartless podcast starring Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Hayes. “Well, the Avatar films are about the environment; I’m not dealing with AI. If I were to do another ‘Terminator’ film and maybe try and to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy.”

Probably the most famous case of a sequel surpassing the original, James hasn’t directed a Terminator since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. That film is not only viewed as better by a large number of people but it’s also regarded as one of the best action sci-fi movies ever. Even though there have been numerous attempts at recapturing the magic of the first two, every movie since has fallen short of the reception they’ve gotten.

The last Avatar is scheduled for 2028, and Cameron knows he’s getting up there in years, and while he wants to stay very much involved, he’s spoken about how he’ll have to train other he’ll have to train the newly appointed directors in his filming process. How he’ll squeeze in a new Terminator remains to be seen. The director has been known to push the boundaries of technology, But his interest lies in breaking new ground for the CGI to further his vision of Pandora and its natives.

It’s recently been reported that the third film in the Avatar franchise has already been shot, and he plans to finish the movie regardless if The Way of Water flops or not. The Terminator movies sealed Cameron as a legendary filmmaker, and to have him back in full would be incredible. However, when trying to explore the lore of the future war, others have overcompensated with convoluted storylines, including Cameron’s contributions to Terminator: Dark Fate.
