Before Jason Momoa took on the mantle of Aquaman, the last actor to play the role of the Atlantean hero on the big-screen was Vincent Chase in the 2006 film directed by James Cameron. Okay, that may have only happened in the fictional world of HBO's Entourage, but Cameron still has a soft spot for Aquaman, and the director recently spoke with Yahoo to give his two cents on the recent James Wan film.
"I think it's great fun," Cameron said, adding that he doesn't believe it's a film he could have made. "It requires this kind of total dreamlike disconnection from any sense of physics or reality. People just kind of zoom around underwater, because they propel themselves mentally, I guess, I don’t know. But it’s cool! You buy it on its own terms." However, Cameron also said that while he can enjoy AQUAMAN, its undersea world didn't exactly resonate with him because it didn't look real, and Cameron should know as he's spent "thousands of hours underwater" as a deep-sea diver. Didn't see any undersea cities or giant crabs during those undersea excursions I guess. Had he directed the film, Cameron said that he likely would have put more of a focus on environmental activism, but said Wan's film "did throw in a couple of things with whales and things like that to remind us that we are kind of using the ocean as a toilet and as a garbage dump. So I applaud the film for that."
The Entourage version of AQUAMAN starred Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Mandy Moore as Aquagirl, Ray Liotta and Sharon Stone as Aquaman's parents, and James Woods as the main villain, Abaddon. Although Cameron's film wound up becoming the highest grossing film of all time, the sequel found Michael Bay replacing him as director and Jake Gyllenhaal taking over the title role. The real AQUAMAN has also become quite the box-office success as it has grossed over $1 billion, but Cameron apparently couldn't resist a little competition with James Wan as he joked, "Come back when you hit your second billion and you're on you way to your third – then we'll talk." Well, as James Wan already had a billion dollar film under his belt before AQUAMAN in FURIOUS 7, it seems that he's already there. Let the Cameron/Wan face-off begin!
