Perhaps the most debated question in the last quarter century of movies is, Could Jack have climbed aboard the door and survived in Titanic? Now, James Cameron has put it to science to put an end to the madness.
According to Cameron, “We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive a stake through its heart once and for all…We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie.” So, should Rose have scooched over on the door after the RMS Titanic hit the iceberg?
“We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo and we put sensors all over them and inside them and we put them in ice water and we tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was, there was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive.” And that one certainly ain’t Jack. And if science isn’t good enough, Cameron also cited Titanic’s themes, saying, “It’s a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality. The love is measured by the sacrifice.”
The door debate has been going on since Titanic was released in 1997. A comprehensive timeline put together by Time traced the evolution of it in the age of the Internet. The most famous test came from Mythbusters, which determined Jack could in fact have fit next to Rose given certain circumstances. James Cameron immediately labeled them as “full of shit.” A decade later came the science experiment in an attempt to disprove the skeptical once and for all.
“Maybe after 25 years, I won’t have to deal with this anymore,” concluded Cameron. Seems like wishful thinking, James.
There will reportedly be a special on the test that will come out in February, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Titanic will also return to theaters in February with a 3D 4K release, which will give it yet another nudge on the box office charts.
