We’re getting a bit more insight into what’s next for James Bond following Daniel Craig ending his tenure as the character in the movie No Time To Die. While we don’t have word on who will be taking up the Bond mantle next, producer Barbara Broccoli revealed that a new film is about two years away from starting production.
Broccoli spoke on the matter at a star-studded private event in central London that was honoring the producer and her brother Michael G. Wilson for their BFI Fellowships. Picked up via Deadline, Broccoli revealed that it will be “at least two years” before a new Bond movie begins filming and that the daunting task of finding a replacement for Daniel Craig hasn’t even begun yet. The reason they haven’t started their search is “because it’s a reinvention of Bond.”
“Nobody’s in the running. We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through. There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”
The private event was held at Claridge’s Hotel in central London and was hosted by British Film Institute chairman Tim Richards. Bond regulars were on hand to present Broccoli and Wilson with their BFI Fellowships as Ralph Fiennes, who plays spy chief M, and Naomie Harris, who plays Miss. Moneypenny, did the honors. Fiennes praised their “transcendent tenacity” while calling them “exemplars of film producers and filmmakers.” Fiennes even joked that even though the producers “killed Bond” in No Time To Die, “Naomie and I are the people to fix it. You find him and we’ll train him.”
I do think it’s great they don’t feel pressure to rush this process. Everyone will be looking at what they do next and their choice of who will take on the role of James Bond moving forward is bound to be a challenging, albeit, exciting endeavor. Fans have their favorites which include Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, and more but it’s possible that none of the popular names that have consistently been brought up will make the cut. We have some time until we find out so I’m sure the speculation will continue until a decision is finally made.
What are YOUR thoughts on this next James Bond movie and where they should take it?
