While casting details related to James Gunn's THE SUICIDE SQUAD are still in the midst of being sorted, one thing has become abundantly clear … Jai Courtney thinks it's positively bonzer that he'll be returning to the role of Captain Boomerang for the Worst of the Worst's next villainous adventure. The DIVERGENT and TERMINATOR: GENYSIS actor expressed as much to Business Insider during a recent interview, wherein he said "We're getting ready to shoot in a few months' time." He then added, "There's not much else I can reveal about it but, yeah, you'll be seeing Boomerang back for sure."
Following his Insider spot, Courtney then met with The Hollywood Reporter, where he proceeded to elaborate on his plan to once again play DC's wise-crackin', boomerang chuckin' badass. "Yeah, I am," he said of his return to Captain Boomerang. "I said it the other day in an interview and I felt like I let the cat out of the bag. I haven't been sworn to secrecy about it so I guess it’s okay to say that I will be."
"I loved playing Captain Boomerang," Courtney beamed. "It's just like a rockers nightmare. Just looking forward to reprising that and getting the gold tooth back in and getting after it."
Ha ha. Oh man, I have to admit that I kind of love Courtney's unbridled enthusiasm for this ridiculous character. Truth be told, I've always been fond of Captain Boomerang, as he is often featured in DC's Suicide Squad comic book series. Is he a pain in the ass? Absolutely. But he's also quite funny, and can be rather heroic when his back is up against the wall. That said, he also has a habit of dying (and being brought back to life). I wonder if he'll survive Gunn's version of the villain-centric franchise, or perhaps be reduced to dust as a result of his own shenanigans? Obviously, we'll have to wait until August 6, 2021 to find out, when THE SUICIDE SQUAD invades theaters.
