It’s time to face your demons in new TV spot for The New Mutants

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

I'll admit to believing that THE NEW MUTANTS would never see the light of day; after all, production on the X-MEN spin-off concluded nearly three years ago, but its release was delayed on multiple occasions as rumours of reshoots and studio dissatisfaction ran rampant. Following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, THE NEW MUTANTS received a new release date which is rapidly approaching, and a new TV spot has dropped which is jam-packed with all sorts of mutant goodness, ranging from Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy) going all Magik and Demon Bear himself.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Josh Boone has stated that admidst all the scares is "a beautiful love story, which I know is a weird thing to hear." That love story is between Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams) and Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt), and Boone said that their relationship is "sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film." Audiences have heard studios tease LGBTIQA+ representation before in films such as AVENGERS: ENDGAME and STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, but they rarely amounted to much, but Maisie Williams says that although the relationship between her character and Moonstar in THE NEW MUTANTS isn't "something that is spoken about too much in the film," it doesn't feel like a gimmick. "It's not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality," Williams continued. "It’s not centered around that and they don’t really necessarily label it. No one else does either and no one really questions it."
