It’s the Booze Talkin’: I want Eva Green to be our next A-List Scream Queen!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

There are handful of actresses that have proven to be major draws in the world of horror, fantasy and science fiction. You have Sigourney Weaver who played the perfect hero as Ripley in the ALIEN franchise. Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor proved to be just as tough as Arnold Schwarzenegger in T2: JUDGEMENT DAY. Kate Beckinsale is all about kicking Lycan and even some Vampire ass in UNDERWORLD. And Jamie Lee Curtis certainly proved to be a formidable adversary for Michael Myers in HALLOWEEN. While she certainly wasn’t a damsel in distress, or even fighting the “good fight” in 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE, I’m hoping that the radiant Eva Green will soon be a major player in our beloved genre. That’s right… I’d be A-OK with Eva Green, “Scream Queen” or fantasy action star!

It’s safe to say that nearly everyone who appreciated RISE OF AN EMPIRE felt that Ms. Green was a major part of its success. Hell, even those who didn’t like it are singing her praises. Sure she is the villain, but truth be told half the time I was rooting for her. After all she plays Artemisia, a woman whose family was slaughtered and she herself held prisoner by the Greeks for their disgusting pleasure. She gives a shockingly great, larger than life performance. Whether she is cutting off a soldier’s head, or having aggressively wild sex with Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) she owns every minute of the film while she’s on screen. In fact, she keeps it moving simply because when she is not around you can’t wait for her to return. Ms. Green makes for an incredible baddie.

Now one genre flick doesn’t necessarily guarantee any sort of scream queen status, nor does being a standout Bond Girl as she was in 2006’s CASINO ROYALE. Of course, 2014 looks to be an exciting year for the actress specifically with fans that have a taste for the dark and deadly. With a high profile Showtime series, another sequel for her to liven up and an intriguing looking indie directed by Gregg Araki, we can expect to be hearing her name often. And while her performance is earning a ton of buzz in 300, I’ll even go as far as to say that she was one of the few highlights in the problem riddled DARK SHADOWS remake from Tim Burton back in 2012. Don’t get me wrong, the film itself was all over the place but once again she made it worth watching.

With only a couple of films in the realm of genre to her credit, it is the upcoming Showtime original series “Penny Dreadful” that looks like a twisted bit of fun. In it she stars as Vanessa Ives who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is “an enigmatic, composed heroine who proves herself a force to be reckoned with.” I’m gonna be brutally honest here, but this show could be complete garbage. It could be a sloppy horror themed LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN and I’d still watch it. She looks absolutely mesmerizing in the trailers and while I haven’t heard too much in regards to the recent preview last week at SXSW – the show premieres on Showtime May 11th – I have no doubt that I will be watching this series for Eva alone. It’s made all the better since she once again is dabbling in horror. Plus, I’m curious to see what’s up with Josh Hartnett lately.

Not only is she appearing in what will hopefully be a satisfying genre television series, she is also part of the cast in the long-awaited SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. What do you bet that she’s the dame to kill for? Come to think of it, this flick has a ton of lovely ladies worthy of that title. I finally sat down with the trailer and yes, I’m ready for this little melodrama. SIN CITY ably managed to excite fans of all sorts of genres, and with any luck this will do the same. With such a massive cast I wasn’t sure if we’d get much of a taste of the lovely Ms. Green when the trailer arrived, but we do get a brief glimpse. As a fan, I can’t even comprehend how excited I am for this. Eva takes a trip to SIN CITY this coming August 22.

Maybe it’s the booze talkin’, but with Eva Green doing 300, SIN CITY and “Penny Dreadful,” I hope this stunning beauty is on her way to becoming a modern day scream queen. That’s not to say I don’t look forward to the previously mentioned Gregg Arakki flick WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD which also stars Shailene Woodley or any other drama she’s a part of. Aside from being a stunning beauty, Ms. Green is a very talented actress so I’d be happy to share her with other genres. Let’s just hope that all goes well and she continues to make movies that are scary, sexy, gruesome and full of action – another one of those great sex scenes wouldn't hurt either. After Artemisia, I’m ready for just about anything from the amazing Eva Green.
