It’s the Booze Talkin; After 10 years, it’s time for The Strangers 2!

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

We all have very specific fears that haunt us. Sometimes they are absolutely impossible… I don’t think Samara will be crawling out of anyone’s television. As well, very few of us are able to bring out some dude with knives for fingers from of our dreams. Then there is the frightening world of home invasion. The one place in the world where you’d hope to be safe from harm. There have been a number of movies about this very subject, in fact, probably too many. Yet for me, I am still creeped out by the 2008 thriller THE STRANGERS. The Bryan Bertino feature may have its detractors, but you can say that about nearly every single film ever made. This creepy flick had me from the very first moment until it’s shockingly grim finale.

Let me start off with some of the reasons I absolutely love this gem. At the very beginning, the main couple, played by Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler, are already under stress. When you take a couple that is already having issues on some level, and you put them in a situation like this, it feels more realistic and dare I say heartbreaking. And ultimately the horror element is more terrifying because of the already divided relationship. It made it easier to believe that the two weren’t even remotely prepared for the shite that was about to fall down around them. Ironically, we usually just see teens looking to get laid in scary tales, so that was absolutely refreshing.

As far as THE STRANGERS themselves, this is also a huge plus in my book. I’ll never forget the audience reaction to Liv’s character Kristen McKay smoking a cigarette as she has a glass of water in the kitchen. The dude just stands there… watching and waiting. Who among us hasn’t had that unnerving feeling that we were being watched by some unseen visitor? As simple as that moment is, it tore down the walls of that safe feeling of locking your doors and windows from all the bad that lurks in the darkness outside. I can deal with scary flicks about driving to some creepy location, but when it goes down where you sleep?!? That’s f*cked up!

Ever since the film’s solid box office performance, fans have wondered if we will ever get a sequel. We keep hearing about it, but nothing happens. Yet, fans hoping for a continuation may finally have some good news. We recently reported that audiences may be finally getting a sequel, and it begins shooting this summer. If you are wondering about the plot, here is what we have for a synopsis…

A family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park and after the power goes out they decide to hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer. Under the cover of darkness three familiar masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit.

While it does sound like it could end up being a bit too similar to the first film, I definitely think there is promise here.

With all this, I say it’s about damn time. I loved what Bryan Bertino did with the first film, and almost ten years later, I’d love to get that creeped out once again. THE STRANGERS themselves are pretty damn terrifying, so I’m looking forward to more from them. And while Bryan won’t be directing this time around, here is hoping screenwriter Ben Ketai and director Johannes Roberts (THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR, 47 METERS DOWN) are able to make us all afraid once again of what lurks just outside our own door. My one hope is that they can still make THE STRANGERS creepy without revealing too much about them. Sequels are always tricky, but there is enough here that I believe we could be in for a nightmarish treat.

Maybe it’s the booze talkin’, but it’s about time we finally get a sequel to THE STRANGERS. This 2008 feature film creeped me the f*ck out, and it also served as a great reminder to be very aware of anything suspicious in the darkness. With a 9 million dollar budget, the feature film managed to scare up just over 80 million worldwide. That’s not bad at all. It would also be nice to get the kind of talent that both Speedman and Tyler brought to the original. I loved the first film, and frankly, I believe that a sequel could satisfy horror audiences as long as they continue to take it seriously and not dumb it down. The idea itself is scary, so hopefully they can make a sequel worthy of the original.
