It’s the Booze Talkin’; A Halloween trilogy from Blumhouse may be a treat!

John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN is legendary. The 1978 classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence was a massive critical success, one that worked just as well for fans waiting for a little bit of holiday horror. The film is not only one of my favorite horror movies, it’s one of my favorite movies period. Aside from the incredible Ms. Curtis, you also had P.J. Soles, Nancy Kyees (credited as Nancy Loomis) and of course, the menacing presence of “The Shape" played by Nick Castle. To this day, the film stands as a shining example of what genre can accomplish on a low budget when  you spend time on character and building suspense. Not only did it span a ton of copycats, it developed a mixed mythology of druid cults and dudes with serious sister issues. And just over 40 years later, they aren’t done yet.

This is the time of year there's always a ton of exciting movie news to get fans pumped about what’s to come. And with Comic Con finally closing its doors for 2019, one of the most curious stories happened to be the release of not one, but two new HALLOWEEN flicks. With Blumhouse having had a successful return with last year’s well received direct sequel to the original, it’s no surprise that we’d be getting another one pretty damn quick. And here we are with a “final” trilogy that is scheduled for release on October 16th, 2020 with the final film finishing off terrifying audiences on October 15th, 2021. Your own personal excitement will certainly depend on where you stand on the last feature, especially considering that David Gordon Green and company will continue to bring Michael Myers back.

When it comes to getting new HALLOWEEN movies, I’m still fully thrilled about the prospect. Much of this comes from the fact that I personally enjoyed the last sequel. But also the fact that this series has always held a special place is my black heart. And aside from that weirdo doctor wanting to put on a mask, I truly entertained in the return of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. I appreciated the opening sequence, and frankly everything that came after for the most part. Having John Carpenter involved with the score was a treat. Watching Jamie Lee Curtis once again take on Myers was thrilling. And even the humor worked especially well within the context of the boogeyman’s return. So yes, I’m beyond excited to see this particular series continue. And if they can end it in an interesting way, I’ll be about as happy as I could be – even if it will ultimately be the last film.

When it comes to the entire franchise of HALLOWEEN, it has been a whole lot of hit and miss. There are several people that love HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS, and perhaps some even loved HALLOWEEN 5: THE REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS. For this fan however, it never fully felt like a HALLOWEEN film without Jamie Lee Curtis. When H2O came out, I was exalted to see the actress return to horror. Yet, this particular return feels even more special to me. With Jamie returning, along with Judy Greer and Andi Matichak, I look forward to the continuing family saga. Sure we all saw Michael surrounded by flames during that final sequence, but that’s never stopped him before. This is the storyline that I look forward to following as opposed to weird cults and all that nonsense. As much as I have an appreciation for all the sequels – aside from the dismal RESURRECTION – it makes me a very happy fan that we will see this continue to play out.

Considering we have over a year until HALLOWEEN KILLS arrives – the first of the upcoming sequels, with HALLOWEEN ENDS finishing it off – there is certainly a chance that it will be yet another crappy sequel. It could be a mess that only drags the long running series of films down. Somehow I don’t think that that will be the case. For years, Jamie Lee appeared to have zero interest in returning. The same can be said for John Carpenter. And now, Blumhouse managed to bring them both together for a modern HALLOWEEN trilogy. To me that offers quite a bit of promise. As well, the prospect of sticking with one storyline for three movies in this particular universe is a damn near miracle. I believe David Gordon Green, Danny McBride and whomever they bring on board will have the passion to do it right. And hopefully, they can keep Michael scary, and Laurie fighting back in a satisfying way.

Maybe it’s the booze talkin’, but a modern HALLOWEEN trilogy will be a treat. Sure some of you weren’t big on the most recent addition to the series, but many of us were. And perhaps the minor complaints that folks had will be addressed in the upcoming films. But with Carpenter and Curtis involved, and the continued work from both Green and McBride along with Blumhouse, I’m ecstatic to see continued interest in one of my most cherished horror franchises. While the idea that HALLOWEEN ENDS will officially be the last film ever is a bit questionable, it certainly gives fans something to prepare for. While HALLOWEEN as a franchise hasn’t been the most consistent, I’m still very much looking forward to where a company like Blumhouse can take this iconic character. What do you think?
