It’s Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah in new Godzilla: King of the Monsters images

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The coming year is stocked full of some of truly massive movies, one of which is GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, which will feature the big guy going head-to-head with a variety of sizeable foes, including King Ghidorah. The upcoming Michael Dougherty film is the third installment of Legendary's MonsterVerse following in the footsteps GODZILLA and KONG: SKULL ISLAND, but unlike the first GODZILLA film, it looks as though the sequel will be wasting no time in getting to the good stuff: giant monsters trashing cities.

Total Film has released a handful of new images from GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS which includes Godzilla facing off against King Ghidorah. Check them out below.

I'm pumped. Michael Dougherty told Total Film that GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will continue the evolution of style and tone which began with Gareth Edwards' GODZILLA and Jordan Vogt-Roberts' KONG: SKULL ISLAND.

What I loved about Gareth’s approach was that it was very grounded and very real. It felt like something you would see if you looked out your window. And then Jordan [Vogt-Roberts] pushed that further, and brought a lot of colour and vibrancy into his frames. I wanted to continue that evolution. You know, portraying the creatures as very realistic, but at the same time embracing the colour that they could bring – especially when you had a three-headed dragon that shoots lightning. You sort of have to embrace a more fantastical element when you bring in a giant moth, or a giant bird born out of a volcano. You try to keep it as grounded as you can, so that it feels real. But at the same time, you’re talking about very fantastical creatures.

The official synopsis for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will hit theaters on May 31, 2019.
